What the blended average hides

Don't trust a single 'average' rate — most of the spend is concentrated in senior engineering/DevOps work at roughly $30–47/hr while a large number of smaller ecommerce/VA tasks are paid $6–20/hr; expect a two‑tier market where long technical retainers pay well but many ad‑hoc gigs are commodity rates.

Treatment verdict

How they hire, and how they treat people

US-based staffing/ecommerce/engineering buyer who mixes short ecommerce tasks with large, long-term engineering and DevOps retainers.

Reputation
Mostly uniformly high ratings with a handful of very low outliers — overall positive but punctuated by several 1–2★ complaints.. Clear expectations, prompt feedback, and repeat work for reliable technical contributors and long‑term engineers.
The catch — ratings are uninformative
Mostly gives brief, positive 5★ reviews with rehire language ('will work with again', 'Highly recommended'), but occasionally posts sharp, specific negatives (e.g., a 1★ for a freelancer and a 2★ for a freelancer).
How they engage
Combination of short, fixed‑price or hourly gigs and multi‑month retainers; the buyer rehired and retained several engineers for long engagements alongside one‑off marketing or design hires.
Working style
Mix of hands‑off engineering autonomy for senior hires and close direction/expectation changes for smaller ecommerce or marketing tasks; some freelancers report requests for high availability and frequent scope tweaks.
Who wins the work
Successful freelancers are proactive communicators who can work as embedded engineers on long retainers or deliver quickly on small ecommerce/marketing scopes and tolerate occasional scope changes.
Repeat hires
Rehires the same freelancers — 3 on 2+ repeat contracts. Deliver once and there's recurring work.
